Dear Valued Broward Health Team Member,
Influenza is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Each year more than 40,000 people will die from vaccine preventable influenza and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized due to flu complications. Despite this fact, many employees have reservations about being vaccinated.
To help you make this decision, here are some helpful tips from the Center for Disease Control:
CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses. While there are many different flu viruses, a flu vaccine protects against the three viruses that research suggests will be the most common.
- Everyone six months of age and older should get a flu vaccine as soon as the current season’s vaccines are available.
- Vaccination of high risks persons is especially important to decrease their risk of severe flu illness.
- People at high risk of serious flu complications include young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease and people 65 years and older.
- Vaccination is also important for healthcare workers and those who live with or care for high-risk people.
Please check with your Employee Health Department regarding additional times and locations the flu vaccination is being offered in your region.
